I was very scared to review this beer, since it was a hook up from our boy Tebo at Breckenridge Brewery. What if it sucked? Should you look a gift horse in the mouth? Well sometimes you have to set your pride and alliances aside and get down to business.
I have been dying to try this beer. Being a wheat beer junkie, I drooled at the potential of sweet agave mixed with some yeasty, wheat, hazyness. The first thing you’re going to notice is the kick ass label art. This is one of the few beers that I would actually get the label tattooed on my body. It has this tongue in cheek Dia de los muertos vibe with a muted earthy colorscape. It definitely grabs your attention.
Agave Wheat pours a beautiful, hazy citrine hue. It is very light, with only trace amounts of foam. The aroma is a clearly expected sweetness punched forward from the agave necter and wheat, there is no trace of hops here. This brew is extremely drinkable, with a very fine balance of wheat bite and mellow agave flow. Agave Wheat is a summer sipping brew all the way, with a very light and refreshing mouth feel. I can picture myself drinking this during summer softball league for sure, or during a marathon of summer kickball.
Agave wheat is an original and downright refreshing entry into the wheat beer family. If you like Goose Island’s 312 or Bell’s Oberon, I promise you will really enjoy this beer. It is got going to satisfy an urge for something hoppy or heavy. But it is a perfect summertime, outdoor, bottle of suds; one that you could share with your girlfriend and still maintain your craft beer cred with your friends. If you don’t set aside at least one day this summer to drown a few of these, then you should just go back to drinking Nati Ice frat boy. Tebo if you ever roll into Chicago, the first round is on me!
