Odell Brewing Founders and Beers Honored in San Diego

Fort Collins, CO. – On May 3, 2012 Odell Brewing Company’s three founders were honored in San Diego at the annual Craft Brewers Conference. Doug, Wynne, and Corkie Odell received the Brewers Association Recognition Award for their support of the industry as a whole, their long time commitment to local philanthropy and support of the homebrewing community, and their inclusive company culture. It was the first time in ten years that the award was presented to multiple recipients.

“We have loved growing our brewery over the last 23 years,” said Corkie Odell, “and it is a thrill to be given this award by our brewery peers.”

Just three days later, Odell Brewing was honored with two awards at the 2012 World Beer Cup®. Double Pilsner won the Bronze Award for Other Strong Beer, and Odell Brewing IPA received the Silver Award for American-Style Strong Pale Ale.

“The World Beer Cup...where else can such diverse brewing professionals sit down to a beer dinner that has been paired with delicious gourmet food while celebrating our similarities and differences,” said Bill Beymer, Head Brewer for Odell Brewing. “It's great that our beers have been recognized as outstanding with such fierce competition from the world over.”

Pond Hopper – A Brewmance - Odell Brewing and Thornbridge Brewery Create Transatlantic Collaboration Brew!

Fort Collins, CO. – On June 8, 2012 Odell Brewing will release Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale, a new beer crafted with the UK’s Thornbridge Brewery. The collaboration brew will debut this year at SAVOR: an American Craft Beer & Food Experience in Washington D.C.

The project was inspired several years ago on one of Doug Odell’s frequent trips to the UK. In 2008, Doug landed at the Thornbridge Brewery of Bakewell. Intrigued by stories of UK craft breweries creating unique and hoppy styles, Doug found himself in the company of kindred brewing spirits. Two years later, Doug returned to Thornbridge and brewed a collaborative batch of beer, similar to Odell’s Red Ale, there. The recipe, dubbed Colorado Red was brewed with English malts and intensely aromatic English hop varieties.

Fast forward to February 2012 to find a reciprocal collaboration brew at Odell Brewing. Caolan Vaughan, head brewer and production manager of Thornbrigde, ventured to Fort Collins to brew Pond Hopper with Doug and the Odell Brewing crew. Brewed with English malts, and American hops (plus one Australian hop in honor of Caolan’s homeland), Pond Hopper features the best ingredients each country has to offer.

“This beer has a rich golden color with aromas of grapefruit, orange pine, and ripe melon,” said Doug Odell. “The overall impression of the beer is balanced with accentuation of hop flavor and aroma over bitterness.”

Pond hopper boasts a 8.9% ABV and is bottled in 750mL cork and cage finished bottles. It will be available throughout the brewery’s ten state distributor region and in the UK. Watch the Pond Hopper video: http://vimeo.com/40882579.

Maui Brewing Company Releases Sobrehumano Palena 'ole

LAHAINA, MAUI, HI - 2 April 2012 - Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) is proud to announce a collaboration with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (JPAA) of Ann Arbor, Michigan to create a very special beer, Sobrehumano Palena 'ole. This will be Maui Brewing's first collaboration released in a can.  The release is scheduled for June 8 at SAVOR, an annual craft beer and food exposition held in Washington DC, and will reach all 11 states Maui Brewing Co. beers are available.

Sobrehumano Palena 'ole is a red ale brewed with liliko'i and cherries. MBC and JPAA will both brew this beer; however MBC will use standard fermentation while the JPAA version is a barrel aged sour.  The beers will be packaged both by MBC (in cans) and JPAA (in bottles).  MBC will produce approximately 4000 cases and 80 barrels in draft of the Maui version.

Ron Jeffries of JPAA tells us a little about how this project came together, "John and Garrett were planning their collaborations for 2012 and because John is from Michigan and coming home for the holidays my name came up.  This whole idea came together really fast -- just weeks before John's visit.  It's been a very challenging blend to develop -- I'm super-excited about it and a little intimidated at the same time. I've been enchanted by Hawaii for years and it's been great to work with everyone at MBC and get to know them.  I always enjoy collaborations but this one is something really special."

Just like the beer itself, the name, Sobrehumano Palena 'ole, is a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term meaning "superhuman" and "without limits".  John Walsh of Maui Brewing Co. says, "I think the names for the beer are a perfect fit. When we started this there were literally no limitations or boundaries placed  on the project whatsoever.  That type of latitude is rare. Collaborating with Ron and Jolly Pumpkin has been a dream of mine for years.  It's an honor to see it become reality."

John was also behind the idea of the artwork that will grace the MBC cans and JPAA bottles. While each design is different, both renditions include an acknowledgment of the distance in miles from Lahaina, Hawaii to Ann Arbor, Michigan.   "The idea for the artwork has been floating around in my head for years.  Given Ron's love of Hawaii and our shared interest in paddle boarding, it came together nicely," comments John.

Maui Brewing Co. is a truly Hawaiian brewery, and proud to be wholly produced in Hawaii. Recognized as Hawaii's #1 craft beer since 2005, the company has a strong commitment to the local economy and the environment.  MBC beers are packaged with the most eco-friendly materials.  Cans are manufactured on Oahu and designed by local Maui artists.  They have the added bonus of better protecting the beer from both light and oxygen damage a which can compromise the taste.  Plastic rings are dangerous to marine life and therefore, a unique, recyclable plastic carrying device is used to hold the cans.  The spent grain from beer production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting.  MBC is also very active in several local Hawaiian charities.

Founder Garrett Marrero and his wife, Melanie, operate a 7-barrel brewpub at the Kahana location as well as a 25-barrel production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina.  Maui Brewing Co. is a truly local beer as 100% of their products are made in Hawaii.

Double Pilsner Flies Again - Odell Brewing celebrates the return of Double Pilsner

Fort Collins, CO. – On March 31, 2012, Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of Double Pilsner. Double Pilsner, a creative take on the traditional Bohemian Pilsner, replaces Mountain Standard for the warmer months as one of the brewery’s four pack offerings.

Bohemian by tradition American by craft, Double Pilsner is filled with rich sweet German Pilsen Malt and spicy Noble Hops. The Odell brewers took the storied style and increased both the malts and hops to increase the ABV and body while balancing the crisp hop character that is so prominent in this style of beer.

“Aromatically, Double Pilsner buzzes with notes of beeswax, ginger and a sharp Riesling white wine,” said Lee Williams in his 2011 review for Denver Off the Wagon. “On the palate, flavors of fresh mint leaf, lemon pith and quinine all busily vie for attention and cumulatively give the beer a breezy Czech pilsner freshness.”

Odell Brewing will celebrate the Double Pilsner release with a tapping party in the brewery’s Tap Room on Saturday, March 31st featuring local food, back yard games, and live music by the Gin Mill Gypsies from 4-6pm.

Double Pilsner is available through September within the brewery’s ten state distribution region.

Two Brothers Brewing Company- Circus Penguin Pale Ale: Walking a tightrope with no safety net…

Two Brothers is as an Illinois brewery that makes some exceptional beers, including Cane and Ebel and (my personal favorite) Domain Dupage French Country Ale. I have enjoyed almost every beer I have ever had from this brewery. The only limited release beer I have had of theirs up to this point is the excellent “Hop Juice.” So when I saw a bomber of something new sitting on the shelf I was pretty jazzed.

Circus Penguin is a pale ale brewed with Organic Beets and Blood Oranges. Considering the two added ingredients I figured this beer was going to be a little darker, but it is actually just slightly darker than most pales. The carbonation is very light and so was the wispy head. Circus Penguin has a very light, clean and bitter smell is reminiscent of a Pilsner or a Lager.

I’m not going to beat around the bush with this review. I found Circus Penguin to be pretty much unpalatable.  The flavor is astringent and clingy. After repeated sips, I could not find a single positive attribute to accredit to this brew. I wound up dumping out about three/quarters of a $10 bottle.   I really feel sorry for a person if this is their first Two Brothers experience. I would direct you to the website to find another beer from these guys, but unfortunately Two Brothers may have the worst website in the industry. It looks like it was designed for a 9th grade programming project.  Seek out something else from these guys and leave Circus Penguin to the clowns.

Consumed: Pint Glass

ABV: 5.9%

Verdict: Skip IT!

Twisted Pine Gets Medieval with April Artisan Ale - West Bound Braggot Fourth Offering in Crafty Local Series

Boulder, Colorado –March 27th 2012 – When designing the Artisan Ale Project, Twisted Pine Brewing Company intended to have its brewers flex their creative muscles in much the same manner as the local artists whose work is celebrated on each label.  With the fourth installment in the series, West Bound Braggot, the Twisted crew has made it evident that they are both willing and able to match their creative might with the rest of Colorado’s artistic community.

West Bound Braggot, which will debut April 7th, is Twisted Pine’s modern take on a medieval classic.  Braggot, more or less a hybrid of mead and ale, was popular throughout Europe in the Middle Ages and Chaucer even made mention of the drink in his Canterbury Tales.  The Twisted rendition began with malted barley, orange blossom honey and Citra hops, before the brewers shifted into adventure mode and added Tasmanian pepper berries and Buddha’s Hand to the kettle.  Then for the finishing strokes this unique ale was fermented with a Belgian saison yeast.

The resulting unfiltered brew pours the color of hazed champagne and the aroma that wanders off the snowflake head is a mosaic of pleasant flagrances.  Scents of nectar sweetness and ripe citrus, along with earthy malt tones, a slight pinch of pepper and the farmhouse esters of the yeast all meet the nose in perfect proportions.  As the first sip finds the tongue, the beautiful balance is upheld and the ale slides sweet and smoothly across the palate, highlighted by a wink of citrus and pepper and punctuated with a dry, crisp finish.  The beer weighs in at 8% ABV and 35 IBU.

The label for West Bound Braggot features the painting “Running Wild” by Boulder artist Lael Har.  The Twisted ale house will relinquish their wall space to Lael for the release-party on Saturday April 7th, where the artist will be on hand from 4-8pm to sign bottles and meet fans of brush and beer and both.  Her pieces will remain on display in the ale house for the remainder of the month and until the following release on May 5th.  For more details on the Artisan Ale Project, visit www.twistedpinebrewing.com.

Based in Boulder, Colorado Twisted Pine Brewing Company has been handcrafting beer since 1995.  They are the brewers of such favorites as “Hoppy Boy IPA,” “Raspberry Wheat Ale” and “Billy’s Chilies.”  The Ale House is a very popular local hangout and boasts 17 taps, 5 rotating.  Twisted Pine is active with local charitable organizations and a strong believer in sustainable business practices.   You can find more information at www.twistedpinebrewing.com.
