21st Amendment Brewery- Back in Black: Was I “Thunderstruck” or should you “Ride On?”

When Jason told me about a new emerging beer style called Black IPA’s I was like, oh hells bells, this is going to suck. I guess in the world of craft brewing it is anything goes. I was worried that this highway to hell would be shot down in flames from the very first sip.

Back in Black pours like a cup of black ice. Its aroma reminded me of a stormy may day, with hints of earthy malt and leathery alcohol. The hops are masked by the roasted malt notes that crash your nostrils hard as a rock. The aroma was actually surprisingly sweet and would wet the lips of any love hungry man. I found the carbonation to be a little light even by dark beer standards.

Since this beer is technically an IPA I was expecting the flavors to reign down like a war machine only to discovers some dirty deeds done dirt cheap. The flavor was more a night prowler that snuck up on my palette like a rock and roll train. Honestly I really enjoyed this beer. The roasted leathery flavor really offset the bitter hops, I have to say, she’s got balls!

This beer is not going to make the wheels of the craft world turn any faster; but, it was still pretty kickass and original. I applaud 2lst Amendment Brewery for trying a brew that could have exploded in there face like T.N.T. Go down to San Fran and track this problem child down. You just might be left saying, you shock me all night long. Tell them Wes sent you; he has big balls and please, have a drink on me!
