Atwater Block Brewery- VooDoo Vator: All The VooDoo Without The Trip To Haiti

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know but I have to say it again because this is another Craft Beer that my father brought back for me from one of his trips out on the road.  I have been blessed to have such great friends and family.  This is a brewery that I had no clue it even existed.  It’s funny, because the Craft Beer industry seems so big but at the same time so small.  Right now I feel extremely small because I know that I haven’t even tried 99.8% (it’s probably more like 99.99%) of the Craft Beers out there.  That’s what makes the industry so awesome to me, there’s always something new to try.  Tonight it’s Atwater Block Brewery out of Detroit, MI and their Dopplebock VooDoo Vator.

Atwater Block Brewery classifies this brew as a Dopplebock and their website describes VooDoo Vator as, “This one is black and sweet!  Its malty character derives from two caramel malts, along with Munich malt, to create the smoothest high gravity beer this side of “The Pond.”  Cast out the bad spirits; get your hands on a VooDooVator today.”

VooDoo Vator pours a dark brown color with a ½” light brown head and aromas of caramel, spice, roasted malt and slight fruit and is a big 9.5% ABV.

This is an odd, yet strangely good beer.  I’m not sure where to begin with this one.  After sitting in the glass for a few minutes it developed a weird sour aroma that I wouldn’t necessarily classify as bad.  The flavor of VooDoo is highly complex and hopefully I can do this justice.  I taste everything from fruit, caramel, bitter chocolate, roasted malts and an ever so slight hint of alcohol.  It seems like there is more going on in the flavor but I am at a loss for words.  This is a pretty damn good beer that borders on pure evil.  If you dig Dopplebocks with a flair for the unusual then you really need to give this brew a try.  Lucky for you, you won’t have to travel to Haiti to get your VooDoo experience.

ABV: 9.5%
