Avery Brewing Company- Karma: Summertime…and the Drinkin’s Easy

As they say, “Karma is a bitch.”  I don’t believe that they were referring to this Belgian Pale Ale brewed by Avery Brewing Company out of Boulder, Colorado.  When I started this website at the end of 09’ I had a strong dislike of Belgian and Belgian style beers.  I didn’t really care for the very distinct flavor that the Belgian yeast strain created.  That being said, let’s fast forward to present day, I am starting to enjoy more Belgian style Craft Beers.  So much so that I won’t hesitate to grab a six pack or bomber of something Belgian to try and enjoy.  This is how I ended up with Karma, I saw that it was a Belgian-Style Pale Ale and the package stated “Limited Release,” which usually gets me every time.  After looking into the Avery Brewing Company’s website, I found that Karma is an April thru August release and it is indeed a summer seasonal.

Avery Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Belgian Pale Ale and their website describes Karma as, “We believe in Karma. We suspect most of you do, too. It truly is a global concept. Very simply put, "you get what you give." Inspired by this principle and the wonderful farmhouse and pale ales of Belgium, we've created Karma Ale, a decidedly fruity and estery ale, intricate in body and nose, all driven by a unique Belgian yeast strain. Remember, good things DO happen to good people. Here's to being good!”

Karma pours a crystal clear golden orange with a tiny ½” beige head.  The aroma is faint pale malts, Belgian yeast with slight hops and spice.

Out of the gate Karma’s aroma is near nonexistent; I just hope this doesn’t reflect the flavor.  Sometimes I have to remind myself exactly what I am drinking.  This is a summer seasonal and what do we typically want out of our summer beers, that’s right, light in body and very drinkable.  If your Summer has been anything like mine, it’s been freaking hot!  So with that in mind, I have to call a spade a spade and judge this as a summer beer.  Karma is a good summer beer that is light in body but without compromising flavor.  Karma has a wonderful flavor that is a combination of sweet caramel malts, slight banana, orange, yeast, spice and earthy hops.  When you’re melting from the heat, this is the type of Craft Beer you want to grab to satisfy your taste buds and stay cool.  While this may not be comparable to some of my favorite pale ales it is good at what it is and that’s a truly refreshing option for those unbearably hot summer days.
