Jason Before I get slammed again for being too Pale Ale and IPA biased I decided to reach for a brew that I probably otherwise not grab. See, I was trolling a few liquor stores today in attempts to find me a couple of bottles of Dogfish Head’s Squall IPA but had no luck. However, I did stop into Cardinal Liquors in Joliet today, they had a great selection but most of all they allow you the ability to mix six packs. When it comes to picking up brews for review, the mixed six pack option is second to none. I started thumbing through the shelves as I determined which of the brews I had not had before. In addition, I also tried to go with styles other than Pale Ales and IPAs. The label on this one stood out above the others and I grabbed for a bottle of Avery Brewing Company’s White Rascal and carefully placed it into my six pack holder. White Rascal is poured and ready.
Avery Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Belgian-Style White Ale and their website describes White Rascal as, “A truly authentic Belgian style wheat or "white" ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yup, that's yeast on the bottom) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher.”
White Rascal pours a Lemon Yellow/Straw color with a small ¼” bright white head. The aroma is that strong Belgian yeast smell along with compliments of lemon, coriander, clove and spices.
Upon my first sip it was instant love. I’m really starting to get worried that I’m enjoying Belgian-Style brews, what’s happening to me?? What I love about White Rascal is that it’s lemony, spicy and not overly Belgian tasting. The Belgian yeast character is not over bearing but dead on perfect, it adds to and compliments the complexity of the flavor while still drinking towards the lighter side. This is one instance where I wish I had got a six pack instead of just one bottle. I can tell you that Alfalfa use to be my favorite rascal but now he has been replaced by White Rascal. This is one you need to try.
