Boulevard Brewing Company- Bully! Porter: Bully Me All You Want!

Jason Here is another brew that I picked up at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA. Boulevard Brewing Company is one of the larger Craft Breweries in the country but unfortunately they do not currently distribute to Illinois. However, rumor has it that they are looking to start distribution here in Illinois in the very near future. This brings me great joy because I have heard good things about Boulevard Brewing Company and having had their Single-Wide IPA and a few others. I am definitely looking forward to trying many more. Boulevard Brewing Company has a year-round lineup of 8 brews and their Smokestack series is highly regarded in the Craft Beer community, of which I picked up a few of those as well this past weekend. Tonight I decided to I would start the collection of Boulevard brews with their Bully! Porter. Porters are in my top 5 favorite styles and I’m hoping this one makes the grade.
Boulevard Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Robust Porter and their website briefly describes Bully! Porter as, “A dark colored, medium-bodied beer with a prominent burnt, roasted malt aroma and flavor and an equally prominent hop aroma, flavor and bitterness. ”Bully! Porter pours a chestnut brown color with a ¾” latte color head. The aroma is a combination of chocolate, roasted malts, toffee and slight coffee with slight hints of earthy hops.
As the famous George Takei once said, “Oh my!” Bully! Porter is very good. All of the character sensed in the aroma comes right through in the flavor. You get a balanced taste of chocolate, toffee, coffee, roasted malts with a pleasurable hop presence that rounds it out nicely. Bully! Porter has a nice malt sweetness to it that won’t bully your taste buds. My only knock on Bully! Porter is that it seems a bit over-carbonated for the style. Aside from that, this is a really good porter. At this point I am hoping that the rumors are true and that Boulevard Brewing Company does make an entrance into the Chicagoland market. Not that I’m suffering from a lack of choices when I hit the local liquor store but having some additional choices would be just fine with me.
ABV: 5.4%
