Butternuts Beer & Ales- Heinnieweisse: Don’t Fuggetta’ Bout This One. "Ameri"CAN" Craft Beer Review Month - Day 8

Here’s another one of the brews I picked up while I was in Washington, DC a few weeks back.  After a great visit at Churchkey, we swung around the corner to hit up Whole Foods and see what brews were available to make the flight home.  After looking at the selection I regretted not bringing a larger suitcase and some bubble wrap.  I had to be careful about my selections to ensure that it would fit for the voyage home.  This brew was actually a part of a sample twelve pack and proved to work perfectly into my suitcase for the flight back.  Yet another example of why cans are far superior to bottles, easier to transport in luggage.  I’m glad I grabbed these as it would have made doing an all can review month even harder.  I decided for my first Butternuts I would go with their Heinnieweisse as it has been quite some time since I last reviewed a Hefeweizen.  With the weather being as warm as it has been this brew lends itself to those warmer days.  Here goes.

Butternuts Beer & Ales classifies this brew as a traditional Hefeweizen and their website describes Heinnieweisse as, “Traditional Hefeweizen from Germany usually taste like cardboard because by the time you drink them, they’re not fresh anymore.  Chuck brews Heinnieweisse with Bavarian yeast and a 67% wheat grist approximately 5000 miles closer to your mouth than Germany giving it a rich, full fresh palate.  Pour it and see the wheat cloudiness, smell the notes of estery aroma.  At 4.9% ABV you’ll taste the effervescent, sweet yet tart freshness that no farty old German can boast.  And what does an Alien have to do with any of this?  Ever notice how a hop looks like an Alien’s head?  Look again.”

Heinnieweisse pours a hazy dark straw/wheat color with a 1” white head.  The aroma is ester/banana up front with some lemony citrus in the background.

Upon my first sip I have to say that this is a good brew that has a ton of flavor.  Heinnieweisse is light and drinks almost too easy but lucky for me, this brew is a sessionable 4.9% ABV.  The flavor is a combination of fruity and citrusy with a bit of a tart bite and is light on your palate while finishing nice and crisp.  I’ve never been a big fan of Hefeweizens but this one had me from the first sip.  Now if it were only available in Illinois.  This is another canned brew that just seems to be a perfect fit for the warmer weather, a lawnmower beer as my buddy Dale calls them.  Well let me tell you, if the summer heat has you beat, fuggetta’ bout it and grab a Heinnieweisse…you’ll be glad you did.

ABV: 4.9%

Consumed: Peace Tree Pint Glass

Verdict: Buy A Twelve Pack
