Clown Shoes Beer- Brown Angel: Brown Ale Seduction

It was about a month ago that I found out that Clown Shoes Beer was starting to hit the shelves at our local beverage depot.  As previously mentioned, I love the name of this company and its connotation.  Not to be out done, their label artwork is second to none when it comes to originality.  I had their Eagle Claw Fist a while back and fell in love and I figured that it was time to try another offering from Clown Shoes.  I headed to the fridge and realized that I had a bomber of their white ale and brown ale, choices.  What mood would I be in this evening?  As tempting as it was to try the white ale something compelled me to go with the brown ale.  I went to the Clown Shoes Beer website to read about Brown Angel and after reading the description I knew that I had made the right choice.  Clown Shoes Beer’s Brown Angel is poured and ready.

Clown Shoes Beer classifies this brew as a Brown Ale and their website describes Brown Angel as, “Brown Angel was designed to have three distinct levels: a dark brown backbone with notes of chocolate and coffee resulting from the use of 1500 pounds of Maris Otter malt, aggressive American hops (Amarillo and Columbus) provide bitterness and some citrus, while a more delicate floral finish is achieved from the use of the classic English hop, East Kent Goldings.  This is NOT your old school brown, but rather a sexy American interpretation.  At 40IBUs and 7% Alcohol it goes down sneaky fast.”

Brown Angel pours a maple syrup color with a ¾” tan head.  The aroma is roasted malts up front with additions of chocolate, slight coffee and earthy hops.

In my book, Clown Shoes is a perfect 2 for 2.  I absolutely loved Eagle Claw Fist and now Brown Angel seduces me.  I’m usually rather blah about brown ales as I find them to be uninteresting and haven’t yet found one that truly impressed me, until now.  Brown Angel seduces you from many angles, it catches your eye with its beautiful brown color, it pulls you in with its malty sweetness, and it hooks you with the hints of chocolate and coffee and finally finishes you off with a subtle hop nibble.  I’m not sure what the folks over at Clown Shoes Beer are doing but it’s rare that I get two excellent brews right off the bat from a brewery.  Brown Angel is a must try for all Craft Beer lovers and especially for those of you that happen to be brown ale junkies.  Brown Angel, I think I love you!
