Dogfish Head- Raison D’Etre: Weird and unique for sure…

Dogfish Head has been good to me so far. Their beers have always been very flavorful and robust. They tend to be full of body and character as well. Raison D’Etre is no exception. My girlfriend’s sister’s boyfriend has been recommending me this beer for ages, so I figured it is time to give it a spin.

Raison D’Etre pours a medium brown shade and is little on the flat side. It has a very earthy smell with hints of coffee and malty sweetness. The label boasts Belgian beat sugars and green raisins. Sensing a theme here? That’s right Sherlock, this stuff is sweet.

And by sweet, I’m talking liquid coffee cake. I can see how some people would love this stuff, but damn it is soooooooo sweet. It starts with an amber ale full bodied flavor, but then an overwhelming fruity sugar burst kicks in. This is a dessert beer, or a once in while beer at best. There is no way in hell you would want to drink a six pack of these guys. Trust me on this. I’m not sure if it was the raisins or what, but drinking four of these in one night had they exact same effect as downing a half gallon of prune juice. I will leave the rest to your imagination.  Dogfish Head has a lot better beers waiting for you then Raison D’Etre.

ABV: 8.0%

Consumed: Pint Glass

Verdict: Buy a six pack, especially if you’re “irregular”
