Wes I got up this morning and graded some papers for a couple hours. I followed this off with an amazing two hour bike ride all over the beautiful city of Chicago, in 75 degree weather might I add. Then I played some X-box which is always relaxing. Next I watched the Bulls and Blackhawks play two awesome games, respectively. Now I am enjoying a brilliant Master’s Tournament with a strong new brew in hand. Days like today make all your problems just wash away.
OK, I know what you are thinking, Firestone Walker Double Jack sounds like a Whiskey or a Scotch and I must say I agree. But in reality Firestone and Walker are the names of this California brewery’s co-owners. If you have ever spent any time on our site, then you know that strong IPA’s are my lifeblood and passion. I greedily snap up everyone I can get without apology or manners. Double Jack is part of Firestone Walker’s reserve series and comes in a classy looking 22oz. bomber.
Double Jack pours a watery orange with a true white head. It was definitely a little more carbonated then I prefer, but that is really a matter of preference. The aroma is what I love about DIPA’s, sweet malt body, with notes of citrus, pine and floral hops. It is woody and sweet with an exotic air like a beautiful European supermodel. This brew is sexy, to say the least.
Firestone Walker has a very competent DIPA here. The flavor is warm and sweet with a hint of cedar. The dry, hoppy finish is rather welcome but almost too subtle to make a statement. There is also an alcohol underbody, which I welcome and enjoy. I am not sure what to say about this brew. It just seems to be so… middle of the road. I mean Double Jack is still an above average beer, but I feel like it needs a signature component to make it stand out from the pact. At the end of the day, making your choice is about money and having an experience. Double Jack is worth a try, but I don’t see anyone getting too excited about it.
