Goose Island- Matilda: A One Of A Kind Tasty, Tongue-Tingling, Treat.

Most of the time when I taste a beer, I usually try to compare it to something else, or as I call it, find its “beer cousin.” Matilda has no beer cousin. This selection from Chicago’s own Goose Island is billed as a Belgian Style Ale. Belgian Ales are usually bottled conditioned, meaning that a little yeast is added to the bottle to continue fermentation even while it sits on the self. This beer is no exception.

It pours a beautiful amber, with a very sweet and citrusy, two inches of foam. The smell reminded me quite a bit of Bell’s winter Ale. Only it doesn’t taste like crap. This is a very sweet beer. Almost like mead. However, the sweetness fades away and leaves a very subtle roasted hop aftertaste. I almost want to call this the Optimus Prime of beers. No, wait Optimus is a little too awesome. Let’s go with Ironhide instead. Anyways this brew is a transformer. The complex flavor is always morphing.

If you’re journeying through the dense universe of the beer world tour, this must be a stop. Will this become your go to beer every weekend? Absolutely not! First of all, it is kind of pricey. I paid almost $12 for a four pack. Also it is called Matilda. So you would probably get your ass kicked if you brought a four pack to a party. But if you have a night to yourself and a foreign film to watch; Why the hell not? Just don’t slam too many. They’re strong and those subtitles might get hard to read.

ABV: 7%

Consumed: Pint Glass

Verdict: Buy A Twelve Pack (or an eight pack I guess)
