Half Acre Beer Company- Ambrosia: Not the nectar of the Gods…

Half Acre has a new brew every couple weeks. Some batches are bigger than others and some are “growler” fills only. Ambrosia was a larger release with its own bombers and what might be the greatest label art ever. Imagine an 8-bit winged monkey with a curly pig tail and antlers who is either eating or vomiting up oranges and curds. This label is how I envision Hunter S. Thompson’s acid flashbacks attacking him in his final years. Half Acre’s newest wheat beer is brewed with oranges and hibiscus like a fine Asian tea.  I just hope it lives up to its epic bottle art.

Ambrosia pours much darker than I expected. If it were a crayon it would be burnt sienna. It was so dark, frothy and hazy that I had a really hard time assessing the carbonation level. I would say medium fizz with a thin and watery head. The nose is sweet with hints of grain, citrus and cream. This brew is really hard to get a read on.

I was surprised by the flavor. I was expecting a beer named Ambrosia to be sweeter, but it was actually rather mild. The hibiscus acts almost like hops in terms of balancing the flavor and adding a lot of bite. The orange flavor is distant at best. Damn, I am really trying here, but this is a weird beer. It’s almost like all the flavors cancel each other out and you are left with an Amber Ale Light. Half Acre has an incredibly drinkable beer here, but not in a good way. I was expecting to have one of my most flavorful beers ever and was left with shell of an experience.
