Jason I am greatly hoping that I don’t get chided for reviewing a couple of stouts within a few day period, God knows that I don’t want to get pigeonholed into being a Stout junkie. Last thing I need is Pam giving me crap because I start ordering stouts when I’m at Finnegan’s. But I digress. This is a brew that I picked up while I was in Asheville, NC. Oddly enough, I didn’t pick this up while I was at the brewery but rather while I was at Bruisin Ales in downtown Asheville, which we swung by after the Highland Brewing Company tour. Bruisin Ales is a Craft Beer retail establishment that boasts over 900 different brews and will even ship to your door. I remember having sampled some of their Black Mocha Stout and I knew that this was a brew that I had to pickup and bring home to review. So here it goes, Black Mocha Stout is poured and ready.
Highland Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Stout and their website describes Black Mocha Stout as, “Highland's most robust beer, having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor. It is black in color with a very clean finish and a moderate hop flavor.”
Black Mocha Stout pours a dark chocolate color with a 1” light brown head. The aroma is an abundance of roasted malts complimented by some chocolate and coffee.
This is a roast-a-licious brew. Black Mocha Stout is a near sessionable (sessionable to some) 5.6% ABV and drinks very easy. You could easily get lost in a Black Mocha Stout as if you were wondering around the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville at midnight. BMS starts with a malty sweetness that quickly turns to a soft roasted malt bitterness with a minimal hop presence and finishes with a caramel kiss. I really dig Highland Brewing Company’s selections as all of their brews we super solid. Of the bunch I do remember BMS being my favorite. This is a brew worth picking up and if you’re in the Southeast you can click here to see where the currently distribute. For those of you not in the area, heading over to Bruisin Ales website and get some sent to your door, you won’t regret it.
