Hoppin’ Frog Brewery- Hoppin’ To Heaven IPA: Hopin’ For Heaven

It’s been a while since the last time I have reviewed a beer from this next brewery.  Between then and now I have had the pleasure to drink and enjoy multiple brews from this Ohio powerhouse.  Plus, I love Ohio, my mother’s family is from there and we always enjoy heading to Columbus to visit with aunts & uncles and partying with the cousins.  So I decided that my date for the evening would be Hoppin’ Frog Brewery’s Hoppin To Heaven IPA.  Will this be heaven or hell?

Hoppin’ Frog Brewery classifies this Craft Beer as an India Pale Ale (IPA) and their website describes Hoppin’ To Heaven IPA as, “Raise your glass to the heavens in a toast to HOPS – the spice of beer! This classic American I.P.A. features the finest American hops to add a spicy, assertive, and citrusy character to its full-bodied, rich malt taste."

Hoppin’ To Heaven IPA pours a reddish caramel color with a 2” Tan w/orange tint head and flourishes with strong grapefruit citrus aromas & a hint of malty sweetness and is 6.8% ABV.

Hoppin’ To Heaven is not quite heaven in my book.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s good but I like my IPAs with a hell of a lot less malt sweetness and a whole hell of a lot of more hop bite.  I want my mouth to feel as if the devil himself was poking my mouth with a pitchfork of hoppy torture.  Again, that’s just me.  HTH reminds me more of an Imperial IPA with its heavy malt flavor and drinks a bit thicker than most of my favorite IPAs.   It starts malty sweet and seems to roll down your tongue with ease and just before the very end it has a citrusy finish and surprisingly a warming effect as if it were a high ABV brew.  If you like your IPAs with a fuller malt body then Hoppin To Heaven IPA is EXACTLY what you should be drinking.  Me on the other hand will wait till they come out with (hopefully) Hoppin’ To Hell Triple Dry Hopped IPA that runs a 105-110 IBU’s and you can only taste a hint of malt…if so, I’d be in heaven!

ABV: 6.8%

Consumed: New Belgium Globe Glass

Verdict: Buy A Twelve Pack
