Jason I’m visiting this beer but not for the first time. As a matter of fact, I have enjoyed Left Hand Brewing Company’s Milk Stout on various occasions. I’ve enjoyed this brew at the tasting room at Left Hand Brewing Company in Longmont, CO, I’ve had this brew at my favorite pub (Finnegan’s) and I’ve enjoyed it at home and anywhere else the mood strikes. As you read previously, Pam Lewis has challenged me to stay away from the IPA and bring about some more style variety to the website and the challenge was accepted and even more so she stated that we should review this very brew. As a dedication to Pam and my commitment to adding some variety I will be reviewing this brew. For those who may not be familiar with Milk Stouts(also called Sweet or Cream Stouts), they are a stout containing Lactose. Lactose is a unable to be fermented by beer yeast and provides for a sweeter taste, bigger body and some extra calories…which I can tell you my fat ass does not need but oh well. So now that we’ve gotten the technical aspects explained it time for the duty at hand.
Left Hand Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Sweet Stout and their website describes Milk Stout as, “Milk Sugar in your stout is like cream in your coffee. Dark and delicious, America's great milk stout will change your perception about what a stout can be. Preconceived notions are the blinders on the road to enlightenment. Udderly delightful.”
Milk Stout pours a deep, dark chocolate color with a ¾” light brown head. The aroma is a strong sweet cream scent with hints of vanilla, coffee and some bitter chocolate.
I have consumed Milk Stout on Nitro, draught and for review purposes, from the bottle. Each and every time the consistent excellence in the flavor comes through regardless of how it is served. I absolutely love this brew. Left Hand’s magical milk miracle is a pure example of craft beer heaven. This is a stout that will change your mind or opinion of what a stout can be. The flavor is sweet and a tad roasty with a slight bitter chocolate finish. The creaminess of this brew is amazing. The average person may hear milk stout and cringe but they would be robbing themselves of a craft beer experience that is second to none. While some of you may miss out, I’ll be following what the commercials have always told me but with a bit of a twist, “Milk stout does a body good!”
