You have to give Magic Hat credit. They have kick ass seasonal packs. Their summer seasonal is my favorite variety pack to take camping. So I was a little stoked to see the fall twelver entitled, “Night of the Living Dead Pack.” Instead of the usual one specialty beer, this pack boast three fall seasonals amongst the four beers offered. Nice! Since I am an IPA junkie I was really pumped for the hI.P.A which is on of their four “IPA on Tour” brews.”
hI.P.A. is a mysterious beast by design. I can only find it in the variety pack and even Magic Hat’s own website doesn’t give much away. I was taken aback by this beers floral and yeasty profile. It has a lemon/citrus aroma that reminded me of Gumball Head. The dark yellow color looks like a lager and the never ending effervescing reminded me of an Alka-Seltzer. This is the strangest IPA I’ve ever poured. I just can’t get a read on it.
Remember when your friend used to say, “don’t judge a book by its cover?” Well that was simply because he likes dating ugly chicks, and hI.P.A. is an ugly check all they way: Not much to the eye but pure personality and probably a rock star in the sack. Simply stated, hI.P.A. is a good time. The cascade hops give it a bitter and citrusy bite. If you like Three Floyds Alpha King, you’re in luck. hI.P.A. is unique and rewarding. Its dry finish will keep you raising the glass to your mouth and wishing you could buy it in six packs. I appreciate a unique brew and this definitely makes its mark.
