Magic Hat Brewing Company- Odd Notion Series Summer ’10: Yeah it has ginger, quit your bitching…

I apologize for my absence the last 10 days or so, I was on vacation. I attended a killer wedding in Northern Michigan, then took off to my parents’ cabin in Canada on Lake Huron for four days of mountain biking, kayaking and no internet to be found. Trust me I drank plenty of beers there, I just wasn’t about to start writing. I mean who the hell works on vacation? One of the cases we brought was a Magic Hat summer sampler. It had some intriguing beers, but none more so than their summer ’10 seasonal from the Odd Notion Series.

Ok. What makes a perfect summer beer? I say that it has to be light, delicious, sharable and taste good a little bit warm, like all summer brews are bound to get. When I cracked open Magic Hat’s Summer ’10 seasonal I was surprised by what I found. It is tremendously fizzy. The head was snow white and frothy like the saliva of a rabid pit-bull. Summer ’10 has a very floral aroma, like a Belgian Tripel.  But it also contains ginger and this made me really nervous. I get hesitant to try fruity beer, but I freaking despise spicy beers. Yeah I am looking at you cinnamon, you son of a bitch.

Luckily, for some weird reason this concoction just works. The ginger gives Summer ’10 a refreshing zest that works well for a summer beer. If you are the kind of person that orders the handmade ginger ale at a Chinese restaurant you just might be in heaven. It tastes like a Belgian Ale with a tangy, citrus twist. It’s not for everyone, but it is worth a shot.

The Odd Notion Series is a cool idea. It is basically a seasonal merry go round of experimental brews. I can respect that. I am actually already looking forward to my first sampling of the Fall ’10 entry into the odd notion series. I mean what the hell, we all have an odd notion from time to time, and we might as well embrace it. Like why do hot dogs come in packs of ten, but the buns come in packs of eight? Or, if you can be overwhelmed but can you just be whelmed? See odd notions are fun, and so is this beer.
