Mission Brewery- Shipwrecked Double IPA: Get Your Hands On This Booty!

This is another brew that Wes’ girlfriend brought back with her from Southern California.  Problem is, she brought it back for Wes.  Short of begging, I pleaded with Wes to let me have it because he’s had and reviewed one before and I had not.  I traded a few of the brews Christina brought back for me with Wes and he parted with this brew with what seemed like a bit of hesitation.  Wes reviewed this brew and gave it high marks so I knew that I had to have one for myself.  Aside from the fact that Wes & I hardly agree on anything, I am hoping he didn’t steer me in the wrong direction on this one.  Mission Brewery’s Shipwrecked Double IPA hails from San Diego, CA and now rests upon my counter waiting for the beer inside to be plundered from the bottle.  Shipwrecked Double IPA is poured and ready!

Mission Brewery classifies this brew as a Double India Pale Ale (DIPA) and the sell sheet their website describes Shipwrecked Double IPA as, “A style of beer curiously born on the foggy shores of Father Junipero Serra’s first founding mission. Our own vigorous entry is one rebellious IPA, quick on the trigger, and brimming with a bounty of hop ingenuity. This is a big, bold, brazen beer, a restless vision of a new America.”  Shipwrecked Double IPA is 9.25% ABV and clocks in at 75 IBU.

Shipwrecked Double IPA pours a clear golden orange with a 1” cream color head.  The aroma is a bounty of hops from citrusy/grapefruit, earthy and resinous.  I get slight hints of malt sweetness but they are very faint.

Ahoy, me Craft Beer maties this is one brew worthy of looting, pillaging and plundering your way to get your hands on this booty.  Shipwrecked Double IPA has a great combination of citrus and earthy hops all while being balanced by a solid malt backbone.  It has that very West Coast resinous characteristic that I love in an IPA.  Shipwrecked Double IPA starts with a citrusy hop bite and then a sweet malty middle with compliments of resinous hops and finishes with a semi sweet/citrus splash that is crisp and clean.  Ok, I apologize for the cheesy pirate lingo earlier but this really is a great brew.  If you ever get a chance to dock your vessel in the San Diego area I highly suggest you take your crew over to Mission Brewery and grab yourself some of this amazing booty.

Mission Brewery- Shipwrecked Double IPA: After 100 reviews I finally found something to get lost with…

So it has been a busy and crazy week. I actually started looking for a new job finally. I am starting a business with some friends and I have been apartment hunting with my girlfriend, needless to say that beer reviews have been put a little on the backburner lately. It came as a surprise when Jason called me on Sunday and said that my next review would be my 100th already. He said, “pick something special” and I knew exactly what I had in mind, Mission Breweries Shipwrecked Double IPA.

Usually I write these reviews as I drink the beer, but this brew was so damn delicious, I just decided to take notes and write the review later because I was enjoying myself a little too much. Shipwrecked DIPA is one of the four bombers that I smuggled back in my luggage from San Diego. I had enjoyed this pirate themed brew so much that I actually forgot about drinking it a couple weeks back. Shipwrecked DIPA has a kick ass scent, it is very citrusy and has a light hop aroma, but it also smells faintly like apple cider. This brew pours like a true pirate’s grog, with little carbonation and no foam in sight. The color is a beautiful, sunset rusted orange with a thick haze.

I was shocked at just how amazing this beer really is. It has a huge hop kick that is packed full of piney hop resin, but still manages to remain sweet and smooth. I was enchanted by how easily this ale went down considering that it rocks a 9.25% ABV. Shipwrecked is Double IPA heaven. It is strong, hoppy and just plain delicious.

A couple bottles of Mission Brewery's Shipwrecked and you will be boarding your ship, patching your left eye and setting sail with your parrot in tow. This shit so good you won’t even care when you wake up to discover that your ship is a shopping cart, your eye patch is a maxi-pad and your parrot is a feral alley cat you glued feathers onto. Grab a bottle of this, do your best Jack Sparrow impression and have a blast, much as I have over my first 100 reviews. I want to thank the TGBOAT crew for all the fun and great brews over the last year. I tip my glass to the new king of double IPAs. Here is to a 100 more boys!
