Jason This is another brew that Wes’ girlfriend brought back with her from Southern California. Problem is, she brought it back for Wes. Short of begging, I pleaded with Wes to let me have it because he’s had and reviewed one before and I had not. I traded a few of the brews Christina brought back for me with Wes and he parted with this brew with what seemed like a bit of hesitation. Wes reviewed this brew and gave it high marks so I knew that I had to have one for myself. Aside from the fact that Wes & I hardly agree on anything, I am hoping he didn’t steer me in the wrong direction on this one. Mission Brewery’s Shipwrecked Double IPA hails from San Diego, CA and now rests upon my counter waiting for the beer inside to be plundered from the bottle. Shipwrecked Double IPA is poured and ready!
Mission Brewery classifies this brew as a Double India Pale Ale (DIPA) and the sell sheet their website describes Shipwrecked Double IPA as, “A style of beer curiously born on the foggy shores of Father Junipero Serra’s first founding mission. Our own vigorous entry is one rebellious IPA, quick on the trigger, and brimming with a bounty of hop ingenuity. This is a big, bold, brazen beer, a restless vision of a new America.” Shipwrecked Double IPA is 9.25% ABV and clocks in at 75 IBU.
Shipwrecked Double IPA pours a clear golden orange with a 1” cream color head. The aroma is a bounty of hops from citrusy/grapefruit, earthy and resinous. I get slight hints of malt sweetness but they are very faint.
Ahoy, me Craft Beer maties this is one brew worthy of looting, pillaging and plundering your way to get your hands on this booty. Shipwrecked Double IPA has a great combination of citrus and earthy hops all while being balanced by a solid malt backbone. It has that very West Coast resinous characteristic that I love in an IPA. Shipwrecked Double IPA starts with a citrusy hop bite and then a sweet malty middle with compliments of resinous hops and finishes with a semi sweet/citrus splash that is crisp and clean. Ok, I apologize for the cheesy pirate lingo earlier but this really is a great brew. If you ever get a chance to dock your vessel in the San Diego area I highly suggest you take your crew over to Mission Brewery and grab yourself some of this amazing booty.
