Moylan’s Brewing Company- IPA: A Concoction Of Complexity

As previously mention in one of my earlier reviews, I headed to the beverage depot a week or so ago and picked up a variety of different IPAs.  So far my selection has not been disappointing and has mainly been from breweries that I have yet to try.  This next brew is a west coast variety that hails from my birth state, California.  The Novato, California based Moylan’s Brewing Company’s IPA is next.

Moylan’s Brewing Company classifies this brew as an India Pale Ale and their website describes IPA as, “Exciting and provocative, India Pale Ale provides a stimulating assault on all senses. Our version of the IPA style possesses a deep golden hue that nearly winks at you from the glass. Extremely full-bodied, its rich flavor wraps your tongue in a lush blanket of sweet malt with a spicy hop finish. Two hop varieties in the Dry Hopping provide an enticing floral bouquet, with notes of resin and herbs, creating a delightfully quaffable and refreshing ale we’re sure you’ll love!"

Moylan’s IPA pours a cloudy copper color with golden edges with a 1” off white head and explodes with piney hop & citrus aromas with a faint malt presence  (upon opening the bottle the scent filled the room) and is 6.5% ABV.

It is worth mentioning that Moylan’s IPA is a multiple award winner at the World Beer Championships and it is easy to see why.  This is a good IPA that has all the markings of your traditional IPA but its taste is something that skews more towards the fringe.  It starts with a slight hop bite that gets stronger with a spicy herbal touch in the middle and then finishes with a smooth malt sweetness but lingers with a dry grapefruit aftertaste.  There’s a lot going on here.  Does this mass of complexity over do it?  That depends, do you like traditional IPA flavor or are you more of a complex taste IPA person?  If you are a straight up standard IPA lover then I’m not sure Moylan’s IPA is for you.  However, if you live life on the edge and are always up for something new and interesting then Moylan’s IPA is just the change you are looking for.

ABV: 6.5%
