Spring is upon us and other than nicer weather; longer days of sunlight and MLB baseball we start to see our local merchants stock the shelves with spring seasonal offerings from Craft Breweries across this great nation of ours. If you’ve been following since our early days I was on a tear through winter seasonal brews as if winter would never come again, plus I love darker more roasted malt flavors typical of winter brews. Since spring has begun and I’m on a self imposed IPA review ban, I figured that I would seek out and try some spring brews while I have the opportunity. I started the other day with Magic Hat’s Vinyl Lager and today I’m switching to a Pale Ale from New Belgium Brewing Company, their Mighty Arrow is on.
New Belgium Brewing Company classifies Mighty Arrow as a Pale Ale and their website describes Mighty Arrow as, “MIGHTY ARROW Pale Ale provides lots of pleasurable sniffs from Amarillo and Cascade hops with a fetching honey malt base. This is our brewed tribute to Arrow, Kim's Aussie/Border Collie mix who ran (literally) New Belgium for 12 years. When she wasn't patrolling the brewery grounds, she was famous for her office visits: She never met a tummy rub she didn't like. Atta girl Arrow.” It should be noted that according to their website, Mighty Arrow is available February, March & April.
Mighty Arrow pours a sunset golden color with a ½” off white head and has a piney/hop and citrus aroma and comes in at 6% ABV.
It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of New Belgium Brewing Co. I have yet to drink a beer from New Belgium that I did not like. Mighty Arrow is no exception. From the first moment it pours you are taken with the crystal clear sunset golden color and mesmerized by its piney, hop & citrus aroma. The flavor is a refreshing blast of hop goodness mixed with very earthy hints that finish with a very faint malt/honey sweetness that is both smooth and enjoyable. Aside from being a spring seasonal this is an excellent example of a pale ale regardless of whether it’s spring or not. Since Mighty Arrow is only available for a limited time, I highly suggest that you dust off the old mountain bike and peddle your butt to your nearest beer retailer and pick up some Mighty Arrow.
