New Glarus Brewing Company- Apple Ale: An interesting take on the old, “who the hell put fruit in my beer” dilemma.

As I mentioned in my previous review I brought a slew of New Glarus brews back from Wisconsin with me. Apple Ale is the other brew I secured (along with the Imperial Weizen) that falls in to the “Unplugged” category. New Glarus beers have always been like a unicorn; I heard a lot about them but I’ve never really got to confirm their existence. Well, after making a trip to Wisconsin I still can’t vouch for unicorns but New Glarus is real and what I have had is pretty damn good.

Apple Ale smells like, well, apples. It was much darker than I envisioned and is a coppery/ bronze pour. It had a thin, snowy head that evaporated quickly. The smell is clean and sweet with no hops to be found. I really can’t pretend to be able to put this beers benevolence into words. The aroma is just so enticing with a sweet earth nose that finishes tart and creamy. Many beers changes flavors in your mouth but this beer actually changes its scent like a smolder witches cauldron.

The world simply needs beers like Apple Ale. New Glarus has created a masterpiece where most other fruit beers fall flat. This is what “hard ciders” wish they could be. The apple flavor is the center piece but the low carbonation level makes for a smooth and wonderful brew that still stands its ground as a “beer.” Apple Ale really has a little something for everyone including: a full apple flavor, a sweetness that is strong but not overwhelming and a creaminess that gives the beer body. This beer is an absolute treat and I am finally starting to figure out what all the “buzz” is about with New Glarus.
