Wes So I brought a bunch of New Glarus back from my UFC/ Milwaukee trip this summer. My plan was to slowly review it but Christina is getting feed up with the ever growing size of my “beer cellar”/ kitchen cabinet space. So… over the next week I will be doing a week of New Glarus beer reviews in an attempt to have a ritually thematic beginning to the cleansing of my review horde.
Fat Squirrel Ale is a nut brown ale that pours a light shade of brown reminiscent of a glass of root beer that had a few ice cubes melt in it. It is crystal clear with no sediment or haze. It has a creamy and earthy aroma that seems to be a common trait in nut brown ales. You can detect hints of roasted malt and coffee wafting through the thin, tan head. I might just be batshit crazy but it smelled like a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich to me.
Luckily Fat Squirrel Ale overcomes its odd scent profile to deliver an amazingly delicious brown ale. New Glarus has crafted a beer that has a commendable amount of complexity while staying remarkably drinkable. The sweet roasted malt has a coffee hint that gives way to a dry and tasty nut finish. There is a minuscule note of alcohol in the finale as well. Fat Squirrel fires harmoniously on all cylinders and maintains a perfect level of beer symmetry. I have always been a fan of nut brown ales and this brew will be my new measuring stick. If I could pick one beer to have after a day of snowboarding, this would be it. If you know me at all, that is my highest compliment.
