Jason If you had a chance to read the Odell 5 Barrel Pale Ale review you would know that my old man brought me back a couple of Odell brews the last time he went out of town. This one he claimed is his “new favorite beer”. Ya’ see; my old man is a macro brew guy. Over the last 5 or 6 months he has seemed to climb aboard the Craft Brew bandwagon. Don’t get me wrong, my dad will just about drink anything but it has been much nicer visiting with him and my mother knowing that there will be a fairly decent selection of Craft Beer when I’m there. I have to mention too that my dad use to travel an insane amount and has been all over the world and has probably had a beer from every country that brews a beer. I hope it doesn’t come across that I’m picking on the old man but if you knew him…you’d give him crap too. So on to his new favorite, Odell Brewing Company’s Cutthroat Porter. This better be good…
Odell Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Porter and their website describes Cutthroat Porter as, “Not quite a stout but definitely no lightweight, Cutthroat Porter is smooth and robust. Inspired by the classic London porters, we use dark roasted malts to create a deep, rich color and flavor that hint at chocolate and coffee. We named it Cutthroat Porter as our tribute to the Colorado state fish – with its own rich heritage and unmistakable dark coloring. And while we’re big fans of small batches, here’s to the currently threatened Cutthroat population reaching mass quantities.”
Cutthroat Porter pours a dark chocolate brown with a small ¼” brown head and aromas of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee and is a close to sessionable at 5.1% ABV.
There are very few things that the old man and I agree on but I have to say that I think he might be on to something. This is a really good , I mean great Porter. I am amazed that the flavor is super balanced, the body highly drinkable and the aromas superb. Being summer, I typically wouldn’t reach for a Porter but this one I would easily reach for on a cool summer night. Another thing I love is that it seems to be perfectly carbonated. Cutthroat starts with combo’d chocolate touch + a hoppy bite then on to a slight caramel/chocolate malt middle with a clean complex and delightful finish. I have to give mad props to the old man; he was dead on with this one. Looks like I should probably be a little nicer to the old man for gifting me this delicious brew…Thanks Dad!!
