Jason I have been way behind on the reviewing lately and I am doing my damnedest to get back into the full swing of things but it just seems like I can’t get caught up. I am swamped with yummy Craft Beer just waiting to be reviewed and it’s coming in way faster than I can drink and review it. A little over a month ago I was lucky enough to orchestrate a beer trade with Dale Miskimins, the man behind the South Dakota Craft Beer Blog www.sodakbeer.com. He was able to score me a beer that I had heard a lot about and was absolutely dying to try, Odell Brewing Company’s Myrcenary. As I have mentioned before, I can’t get Odell here in Illinois and to get my hands on this was almost as much excitement as I could handle. I have friends in Colorado that have told me how good it was and I had also read a lot of opinions that this was a must try beer. Now I no longer have to dream of getting to try one, because now I can.
Odell Brewing Company classifies this brew as an Imperial India Pale Ale and their website describes Myrcenary as, “Named for Myrcene, a component of essential oils in the hop flower, Myrcenary Double IPA is our tribute to those who revere the illustrious hop, and their unyielding exploit to craft hop forward beers. Brewed with a blend of hops containing the highest levels of Myrcene, this double IPA prevails with a tropical fruit-like flavor, a pungent floral aroma, and a clean getaway.”
Myrcenary pours a golden yellow color with a ½” off white head. The aroma is grapefruit, resinous hop oil, pine, lemon zest and passion fruit.
I truly cannot thank Dale Miskimins enough for working with me to get this brew. Myrcenary is fascinating! It’s no surprise that I am an IPA/IIPA junkie and this brew satisfies my cravings to the fullest. It’s super citrusy, has a West Coast hop bite and is balanced by a malty sweetness that is near perfection in my book. The citrus/passion fruit flavor along with the hop flavor and bitterness are just such a wonderful combination that this beer really sets itself apart from other Imperial IPAs out there. While most Imperial IPAs tend to lean on the darker, caramel color side, Myrcenary is very light in color. The body doesn’t seem to be as thick as a typical IIPA, which make it go down even easier. I continued to be more and more impressed with Odell Brewing Company with every one of their brews I get to try. This has to be one of best craft breweries in the country and is quickly climbing my list of favorite Colorado breweries. If you are an IPA/IIPA junkie like me, do what ya gotta do to get your hands on this brew…you’ll thank me.
