Steve First off I am super pumped about going to San Francisco for the Craft Brewers Conference 2011. I leave on Tuesday, March 22nd and will be there until Sunday, March 27th. With my departure date just ahead of me I began reminiscing about the last awesome beer event that I attended, the Great American Beer Festival. While in Colorado for GABF we stopped at a little liquor store and I bought a few beers that I was going to take home with me to drink at a later date. Well, today is that day and I excited to finally unscrew the cage and pull the cork off Supplication by Russian River Brewing Company, a beer that I’ve waited since September to drink.
Supplication pours into my glass with a large off-white head. The color is red, a lot like Irish Red ale, but that is the only similarity. The carbonation level is very high like champagne. My nose picks up tons of barnyard funk from Brettanomyces and I also smell earthy wood and cherries. As I take my first drink of Supplication I notice the sour cherries which are definitely there and add to the complexity of the beer, but the real stars on the palate are the funky, sour, and woody flavors.
I absolutely love the complexity of Supplication. Vinnie Cilurzo over at Russian River Brewing Company definitely knows how to craft beers with tons of complex flavors. His use of bacteria and wild yeast is that of an artisan with well honed skill. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to go to GABF which gave me the chance to buy this beer. Now I get the chance to go directly to the brewery and hopefully meet Vinnie himself who I know is presenting a seminar at the conference that I will not miss. I you are a fan of great wild and/or sour beers you should absolutely give Supplication a try.
