Wes Sadly, this is one of the last beers I have from my Michigan road trip. After IPA’s, I consider Autumn Ales to be my favorite type of beer. Short’s has an Autumn Ale that they call an Extra Special Bitter, which can be very tasty if your in a proper mood. I’m hoping Short’s can live up to their excellent track record with this offering.
Autumn Ale is a beautiful beer. It looks like autumn in a glass, almost resembling a cup of red, yellow and copper swirling leaves. I was intrigued by the lack of head and very low carbonation. If I had to sum up the scent in one word, I would say bitter. The aroma is malty and sour, which is kind of counterintuitive, but completely apt in this case.
Short’ has concocted a very interesting beer here. All the important fall beer components are here, earthy malt, hints or nutty roast and even toasted bread. All this amazingly appetizing abundance is quickly replaced with a biting and bitter finale. The finish is crisp and perfectly punctuated to make you perpetually raise the glass to you lips. I found Short’s Autumn Ale to be a tasty, original and pleasant diversion from my Oktoberfest O.D. Autumn Ale is not going to blow your mind, but it is definitely above average.
ABV: 5.7%
Consumed: Pint Glass
Verdict: Buy a Six Pack
