Wes So my spring break is extra late this year because of Easter being pushed back and I was not able to go snowboarding in Montana. Instead I decided to visit my bro Ryan and is wife Amy in Michigan and check out their new house. It was a great and relaxing weekend and I love every second of it. Naturally I brought plenty of beer back (about $150 worth) including Bell’s, New Holland, Mt. Pleasant Brewing Company, and of course tons of Short’s. Over the next five days, I am going to review five Shorts Brews in a segment I am calling, “Michigan Spring Break.”
Pilsners seem to have gotten a bad rap do to swill like Bud Light and Miller Lite. The Curl pours like a traditional pilsner, very pale and light with an abundance of fizz. This straw colored lager smells very clean and crisp with almost no hops in the aroma. The foamy head was quite frothy and thick with lacing that clung to the glass like glue.
Short’s has definitely broken the mold here. The Curl is an exquisitely unique and original beer. It tastes like a pilsner concentrated into a raw and powerful crude state. This brew almost assaults your tastes buds with an extremely crisp, clean and sour flavor. The pale malts are ramped up to a point that is going to turn a lot of people off. There is a hint of sweetness here but it is squashed by the dry and bitter ending. This is far from my favorite brew from shorts but I respect the originality and complexity of a lager with this kind of disposition. Everyone has to try The Curl at least once. It might be the ultimate beer to eat with hot wings or curry chicken.
