I have noticed that Short’s Brews tend to have a very short shelf life. Jason told me it was because their beers are unpasteurized and need to stay refrigerated. That made sense because I had lost a few of their beers to spoilage. So when my Mom brought some Woodmaster Brown Ale, brewed with maple syrup and toasted pecans, I decided to take no chances and review it as soon as possible.
Woodmaster pours a heavy, viscous, dark brown hue. It was surprisingly bubbly with big air pockets gurgling up like an ancient tar pit. Its aroma reminded me of a barely wine, with hints of toffee, roasted malt and alcohol. There is also hints of a burnt syrup, similar to a freshly served crème brule. If you close your eyes and focus there is also faint hints of real maple syrup. This beer is killer. Honestly I wanted to pour it over some pancakes.
Short’s has crafted a brew that you have to experience to believe. I have a soft spot for complex beers and Woodmaster is like a freaking mouth symphony. The initial flavor of Woodmaster is a warm roasted malt appetizer. The entrée comes in the form of a full bodied buffet of toffee, coffee, black licorice and nuts: peanut, almond and pecan. Woodmaster finishes with sweet hints of syrup and brown sugar with a splash of molasses.
I was blown away by this beer. It features a slew of flavors that I thought I despised until I discovered this gem. Short’s Woodmaster is a must try. There is something in this beer for everyone. Honestly I think this may be the perfect winter beer. I always wondered what my dream beer would be after a perfect powder and glade snowboard run, well I found it. Even the name fits, bow down to the Woodmaster!
