Ska Brewing Company- Mexican Logger: Where is Babe the Azul Buey? Ameri"CAN" Craft Beer Review Month - Day 5

Very few cans can grab your attention like Ska’s Mexican Logger. It is neon green with a chainsaw and a bright yellow lettering. The can looks like a pair of Zack Morris’ swim trunks. It features saaz hops that are very traditional to lagers. Over the last few years beers like Magic Hat’s Vinyl Lager have really helped to open up my mind and perception about what a lager can be. Someone needs to dispel the myth of pilsner piss water that Bud and Miller insist upon perpetuating.

Mexican Logger pours a pale straw/ hay color. It had a paper thin head with an abundance of carbonation. The aroma is crisp and astringent with a sour floral/ citrus nose. It seems to have the “bite and snap” of crisp lager which is impressive since this beer has very little meat on its bones in terms of “body.” It also has a slight creaminess that is detectable on the backside of the scent trail. Overall it is quite intriguing.

Ska has crafted something interesting here; Mexican lager has a pretty enjoyable bite paired with a crisp and refreshing flavor. This is the beer you want to be drinking while playing softball. A lime in Mexican Logger on a hot summer day might help your worries drift off into the sunset. The finish is a little citrusy and creamy while remaining light and delicate. Mexican logger is a very safe and refreshing pick, but it will not appeal to those looking for a strong ale or bitter IPA. However if you have a day planned in the sun, this would be an excellent go to. Mexican Logger just might find its way into my lollapalooza stash this august to bolster my day in the summer sun.

Ska Brewing Company- Mexican Logger: Finally!! Ameri"CAN" Craft Beer Review Month - Day 4

There is no hiding the fact that I absolutely LOVE Ska Brewing Company.  Actually, LOVE is an understatement.  I worship Ska Brewing Company.  I have yet to have a brew that was less than stellar from the Durango based crew.  However, there has been one Ska brew that has been ever so elusive.  We couldn’t get it here in Illinois and as far as I knew, you could only get it in Colorado.  Let me back track for one second.  Prior to my full fledged commitment to Craft Beer (So far only one non-Craft Beer has been consumed in the last 20 months) I was a big fan of Mexican Lagers.  I use to drink the hell out of Pacifico, Dos Equis, Tecate and Corona…like it was going out of style.  There was just something about Mexican Lagers that I so enjoyed.  Now back to present day.  The beer of which I speak is Ska Company’s Mexican Logger.  Yes, it was coming to Illinois and was being released during Cinco de Mayo.  My favorite Craft Beer establishment was throwing a big fiesta for Cinco de Mayo but unfortunately I had some issues that I was dealing with and could not attend.  I was sure that I missed my chance at a Mexican Logger and that I would have to wait another year.  Thankfully this was not the case as my spectacularly amazing, wonderful and thoughtful friend Pam was able to hook me up with a can and my search for a Craft Beer version of a Mexican Lager was complete.  I have to say that I am beaming with excitement to try this brew.  Like a tourist in a Mexican border town…my taste buds are ready to be mowed down in a flurry of gun fire flavor!

Ska Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Mexican-Style Lager and their website describes Mexican Logger as, “Some beers work a little harder than others for your enjoyment.  This one chops down trees all day for it.  The perfect Mexican Lager.  Light and refreshing, it really hits the spot after a long day of brutal chainsaw work.”

Mexican Logger pours a light straw color with a ½” snow white head.  The aroma is bready and citrusy with a slight hint of yeast.

No need for a lime as this Mexican Logger is truly sublime.  Ska has once again proved to me that they are the biggest and baddest tree in the forest and no logger is gonna cut them down.  I first have to say Thank You to Ska for deciding to distribute this brew to Illinois, another Ska brew to check off my list.  To say that Mexican Logger is refreshing, crisp, light and full of flavor is an understatement.  It has a beautiful balance of flavor that is citrusy, bready and just that right amount of hoppiness.  At 4.2% ABV, Mexican Logger can be your summer go-to brew when you need to cool off after hacking away at weeds in the yard or plowing the back 40 without worrying about messing with your aim playing bags.  I find it extremely fitting that there is a chainsaw on the can as this brew will surely cut right through your summer thirst and leave you feeling completely refreshed.  To Ska Brewing Company, I bow to your Craft Beer greatness and look forward to tasting what’s next…I have a feeling that my fridge with be stuffed with lime green cans for quite some time.
