Ska Brewing Company- True Blonde Ale: A Bit too Ditsy

So, wandering a local liquor store I once again found myself in a slightly indecisive moment, kind of like when you first hear the dreaded three little words from a prospective mate.  Although my current situation did not involve a potentially life altering move, it did give me the opportunity to make my evening exciting.  On the other hand, it also had the potential for colossal failure.  I am speaking, of course, about perusing the selections of a local liquor store in search of the perfect beer to compliment my evening.  I passed over some of my usual standbys in search of this fulfillment.  What I eventually selected was True Blonde, an ale hailing from Ska Brewery Company in Durango, Colorado.  An exciting and buxom cartoon babe enticed me from the six-pack, and so I decided to indulge.

The Blonde smelled okay, she wore a strong floral perfume, which put me off a bit.  When poured, she filled the glass with a thick pale color and a sweet aroma.  As far as the head, the Blonde was not overly giving.  The brew produced a light and aromatic head that was somewhat short lived.  While the light body and smoothness made this beer easy to drink, the sweetness and floral aroma were slightly overpowering. The Blonde left a sweet aftertaste on the back of the tongue that I would consider substantial.

Like so many blondes I have met, the blonde ale offering from Ska was appealing upon first glance, but once I got to know her I was let down.  As I said, the floral aroma and sweet taste were a bit overpowering.  Ska attributes this flavor to “local, natural wildflower honey” used in brewing.  While this is an interesting technique, for me, the resulting flavor is not a favorite of mine.  I have to admit that when it comes right down to it I am a bigger fan of the bitters, however, I could not recommend this concoction for everyday drinking, and it is not something I would purchase again.  I got sucked in by the Blonde’s feminine wiles, but I ended the evening without satisfaction and in despair like so many times before.

ABV: 5.3%
