Stone Brewing Company- Lukcy Basartd Ale: Have I been down this road before…?

Wes I am a big fan of Arrogant Bastard by Stone Brewing Company out of Cali. So I was a little surprised at myself when realized that I had never actually reviewed it for the site. My girl brought back a bottle of Lukcy Basartd from her “Out West” excursion. Lukcy Basartd is a one time anniversary ale brewed to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Arrogant Bastard. Yeah, I am a sucker for these one-time brews, especially when they are based off a beer I have already enjoyed.
Lukcy Basartd pours a little darker then its counterpart; it is a reddish/ mahogany color. If I had to describe this beer in one word I would have to say, dense. This brew seems to have its own gravitational field. I love the aroma of this beer as well, think woody cedar and roasted malt with a hint of floral hops. This package is complemented with a slight haze and a khaki head the supports a medium body.
Flavor: this is where things get complicated. The flavor is amazing, with hints of sweet cream, earthy leather and piney hops. If this was my first time trying Lukcy Basartd I would be floored. However, it is not, because this brew tastes way too much like Arrogant Bastard. Stone just didn’t do enough to differentiate this beer from its predecessor. I hate to be a stickler but I was expecting a new headliner, not an awesome tribute band. If you have never had Arrogant Bastard, for the love of god try this. But if you have already had the former, the latter, unfortunately, isn’t going to do much for you. And the label, with its scrambled up letters, is flat out fucking annoying to read.
ABV: 8.5%
Consumed: Globe Glass
Verdict: Buy a 12 pack
