Thirsty Dog Brewing Company- Old Leghumper: Down Boy, Down!

Jason As mentioned in previous review my father is an over the road truck driver. One of the cool aspects of his job is that he will occasionally pick me up a brew from out of state. He’s managed to (at this point) bring back some real winners for which I am grateful for. A while back he was crowing about this porter that was amazing and for some reason could not remember the name. He said that he would try and bring me back a six pack next time he was in an area that carried it. Shortly after that he said he had found it and would be bringing me back a sixer. Not surprised, but by the time I made it to my folk’s house to pick it up…there was one left. I’m almost hoping that it’s not as good as he said because if it is, I’m gonna be bummed. Thirsty Dog Brewing Company is based out of Akron, OH and their robust porter is aptly named Old Leghumper in sticking with the “dog” theme. I have to say that I love the name…I just hope I’m as entertained by the beer as I am the name. Old Leghumper is poured and ready.
Thirsty Dog Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Robust Porter and their website briefly describes Old Leghumper as, “A robust porter, dark brown in color and full bodied with a malty sweet taste. Deep roasted, yet silky smooth! Two types of roasted malts, including deep-roasted chocolate malt, are used to give this porter a rich, chocolaty taste.” Old Leghumper is a 2002 World Beer Cup Gold Medal Winner.
Old Leghumper pours a dark chestnut brown with a 1 ¼” khaki head. The aroma is a semi sweet chocolate with roasted malts and faint hops in the background.
Like an ole’ faithful dog, Old Leghumper is great beer to come home to. This brew is loyal to the style and has a chocolaty sweet taste that is greatly complimented with roasted malts that impart a slight coffee flavor. There is a faint hop presence but minimal as it should be. The body is silky and smooth just like your freshly washed four legged friend. The old man was right, this is a really good brew and thankfully he left one for me. I can’t help but think that the saying on the label couldn’t reflect my attitude more towards the name of this brew, “So many legs…So little time!” Take the time and grab yourself a Leghumper, you’ll be glad you did.
