Three Floyds Brewing Company- Alpha King Pale Ale: All rise for the king

Nothing quite screams, “drink a beer” like a freaking Monday. So they make a good day to write a review. I was looking for a bitter brew to match my bitter attitude, something that would erase my never ending dream of driving my elbow through my incompetent boss’s stupid face. I decided to head back to a brewery that I have not had much luck with, Three Floyds. Tonight I was going to give Alpha King Pale Ale a shot. Would they manage to break the curse this time around?

Alpha King Pale Ale pours dark amber with a thick and very robust foam.  It has a very crisp and slightly sweet, hoppy bouquet. This sweetness transcends into the flavor as well. It has a very tasty roasted hop bitterness that balanced with a grainy caramel finish. It reminded me of a slightly sweeter Two Hearted Ale, and yes, that is a very good thing. I could not put my glass down. This is a delicious beer that Three Floyds should be very proud of.

Moments like this are why I will never judge a brewery based off one, two or even three beers. Beer is about finding your compliment. This beer compliments my tastes perfectly. It is a straight forward pale ale, with great flavor, and a resounding “drinkabilty.” If you’re trying to compile your definitive top 50 greatest beers list like Jason and myself; I would find it hard to believe anyone would leave this beer off!

Three Floyds Brewing Company- Alpha King: King For A Day

Man, the beers are piling up in the garage and I’m starting to get behind.  Poor me, right?  I sifted through the stock to see what would jump out at me and low and behold, a King.  A Three Floyds Alpha King to be exact.  So it is time to get medieval on this beer and see if it is deserving of the moniker of a King.

Three Floyds Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Pale Ale and their website briefly describes Alpha King as, “3 Floyd’s flagship beer, Alpha King is a big American pale ale that pours a deep amber with a creamy head. This ale is brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops giving it an intense citrus aroma and a crisp hoppy finish.”

This brew poured a dark amber color with light sediment dancing in the glass and a thick 2” light tan head with citrus and hop aromas.  Alpha King is 6% ABV.

I can say that I understand why they refer to Alpha King as their “Flagship” brew as this beer is from a royal bloodline.  At 66 IBU’s I expected this beer to have a little more bite but the malt balances the flavor nicely.  If your friends are storming your fridge like a castle make sure you have it stocked with some Alpha King to send those peasants back to the couch where they belong.  After a few of these they’ll start feeling like Knights of the Round Table with you as their King.  Three Floyds, this is one King I’m more than happy to bow to.
