Jason It may seem odd but I actually keep track of each beer I review and keep a running record of what’s been reviewed since I started this website a little over a year ago. I remember almost missing my 100th review on the site and almost missed my 200th. It’s not like its any great accomplishment but still I’m pretty stoked to be reaching that mark. So for my 200th review I wanted to pick something significant and special. This beer was brought to my by Steve, is from a local brewery and it’s a winter seasonal. Sounds like the perfect 200th review beer to me. So I’m happy to give you Black Sun by Three Floyds Brewing Company. Three Floyds is one of my favorite breweries and I’m looking forward to enjoying what is hopefully another great brew from 3F. Black Sun is poured and ready.
Three Floyds Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Stout and their website briefly describes Black Sun as, “Black Sun has a nose of coffee, roasted malts and piney hops. This medium bodied stout has a broad depth of maltiness and a clean dry finish.”
Black Sun pours a midnight black with a 2” brown head. The aroma has a lot going on, I get scents of hops, coffee, roasted malts, cream and chocolate. Black Sun is a Winter seasonal released in December.
Black Sun is very interesting. It has a great flavor with a really hoppy punch that seems to confuse my taste buds. My buds are telling me, “Hey, this doesn’t belong here!” while at the same time I rather enjoy the uniqueness of this brew. Underneath the hop flavor is a fantastic stout beast that is killer in nature. However, the hops are really throwing me off which I know sounds strange seeing that I am a full blown hop head. As I delve deeper into the bomber and as the brew warms a little more the flavor balances out and the coffee, chocolate and roasted malts really come through. There is a lot to be said for consuming a beer at the appropriate temperature. I was really leaning towards being so-so about Black Sun but it just continued to get better and better as I went along. Once again, Three Floyds continues to impress me over and over again. My hats off to Three Floyds, I could not have picked a more perfect brew for number 200!!
