Three Floyds Brewing Company- Moloko: Alex & His Droogs Would Love This Brew

Jason A few weeks back I was perusing the isles of Jay’s liquor on the other side of town when I noticed a very colorful bottle with some sweet artwork. I picked up the bottle and noticed that it was a brew by Three Floyds. I love me some Three Floyds. So without really knowing what I was buying, I grabbed it and added it to the beer order. As I was sitting waiting to be checked out I took a look at label and noticed that it was a Milk Stout and seeing that I love Left Hand Brewing Company’s Milk Stout, I was like “hell yeah!” This one-two combo of Three Floyds and Milk Stout has me thinking that I better stop typing and start drinking. Here goes…
Three Floyds Brewing Company classifies this brew as a Milk Stout and their website describes Moloko as, “This Milk Stout is brewed with a portion of golden naked oats and lactose milk sugar to give it a rounded and full-bodied mouth feel. With a deep roasted and slightly sweet maltiness.”
Moloko pours a dark coffee bean color with a ¾” milk chocolate color head. The aroma is a bitter chocolate up front with some coffee, toffee and subtle cream hints.
After reviewing back-to-back milk stouts, it reminds me that Dr. Jekyll had Mr. Hyde and now I know Left Hand Brewing Co’s Milk Stout has Three Floyds Brewing Company’s Moloko. Despite being of the same style these two brews could not be more different, which is freaking awesome!! Moloko is more roasty, bitter and higher in ABV. It has an almost bourbon barrel-aged flavor in the finish and is a little less carbonated that Left Hand’s Milk Stout. Moloko is also a little less creamy in the body and not quite as sweet. This is a great brew, which I expect nothing less from Three Floyds as I find that their brews have a quality and uniqueness that lets you know that you’re drinking a Three Floyds. My only confusion about this brew is the name, where did they get Moloko? After Googling Moloko I realized the greatness of the name and the genius it took to come up with it was sheer brilliance. Moloko is Nadsat slang from the novel A Clockwork Orange which means “Milk”. Damn, that’s cool and this brew represents the coolness of its name to a T!!
