Jason Damn, it’s getting crazier and crazier around here. I am juggling a bunch of things right now and my time for reviewing has suffered huge. But, I’m not going to cry about it, I’m just going to forge ahead and do the best I can. I wandered to the fridge and realized that I have another brew from my trip to Colorado to attend GABF. I picked this one up while at a liquor store in Longmont after spending a few hours at Left Hand Brewing Company. I grabbed this one for a couple of reasons, 1) Canned, 2) IPA (No Surprise) and 3) its a relatively new brewery with a simple and understated look on the can. I figure that due to the simplicity of the can design it had to be a sign that they were trying to say, “Hey, we don’t need some flashy stuff on the can; it’s all about what’s inside!” Upslope Brewing Company’s India Pale Ale is poured and ready!!
Upslope Brewing Company classifies this brew as an India Pale Ale and their website describes Upslope India Pale Ale as, “Our IPA will appeal to the beer enthusiast who desires a bold, deep and bitter ale. With a coppery color indicative of a traditional IPA, Upslope India Pale Ale has a complex malty character and is more well-balanced than most IPA’s, but still offers that bitterness that IPA lovers seek.”
Upslope India Pale Ale pours a dark copper/ruby red color with a ¾” tan head. The aroma was malty and flourished with caramel malts, some resinous hops and a slight alcohol smell. This isn’t your standard IPA; it rocks in at 7.2% ABV.
This Boulder, Co brew is big and thick. Not like oil thick but thick in flavor. It’s got a fat taste that is bold (as described above) and malty but has a great hop bite to it. I’m really caught off guard as it drinks more like a double/imperial IPA. Its very west coast style in its feel and you can taste that oily hop resin common with the style. This is a really good IPA, I’m loving it start to finish. For those of you in Colorado, “You Bastards!!” you get to enjoy this brew at will, while I sit here wishing for just one more. For being an upstart brewery with two years in business, these guys have it nailed. There are only bright futures for Upslope Brewing Company and hopefully before long we’ll get to enjoy their fine brews this side of the Mississippi River.
ABV: 7.2%
