Victory Brewing Company- Prima Pils: One Pimped Out Pils

This is another brew that I got for my mixed six pack at Cardinal Wine & Spirits in Joliet the other day.  I grabbed it for two reasons.  One, it was from Victory Brewing Company and I’ve had great experiences drinking their brews.  Second, it is a style I have yet to review on this website, a German Pilsener.  As you know, I am slowly dipping my toe into the Belgian styles and I have to say that I am doing the same when it comes to German style beers.  I’ve always drank German style beers but they haven’t exactly been my favorite.  In my journey to become a better, well rounded beer drinker and advocate for the consumption of quality brews, I have to step outside my box and enjoy as many styles as possible.  This evening’s delight will be Victory’s Prima Pils which is poured and ready to go.

Victory Brewing Company classifies this brew as a German Pilsener and their website describes Prima Pils as, “Heaps of hops give this pale lager a bracing, herbal bite over layers of soft and smooth malt flavor. This refreshing combination of tastes makes Prima a classy quencher in the tradition of the great pilsners of Europe.”  The label on the bottle tells a little more in depth story, “Prima! An exclamation of joy.  A recognition of accomplishment.  Though it’s spoken in German, it’s felt in all languages.  It’s what escaped from our lips as we sampled the first brew of this mighty Pilsner beer.  Though we’d been through a few in our years with other breweries, finally, with whole flower European hops and fine German malts we had achieved what we’d sought for so long.  Prima…an exclamation of Victory! Prost!”

Prima Pils pours a slightly hazy straw yellow with a tight bright white head.  The aromas range from lemon, citrus hop, floral hop as well as a mild bready malt smell.

This is my first true taste of Prima Pils and I have to say that I was expecting something completely different.  I was expecting something a little more subtle and with a little less flavor but what I got was an amazing sip of a brew that I would have been drinking for quite some time now had I known how good it was.  Prima Pils is lemony, hoppy and plain ol’ delicious!!  Despite being near the end of November, I would say that this brew would be best enjoyed on a beautiful summer day or as Dale refers to a brew like this as a “Lawnmower Beer.”  However, if you are a big fan of Pilsners, you may want to keep this one stocked in the fridge year-round.  This is one pimped out pils that has me shouting, “Prima!”  Once again, Victory Brewing Company has me smiling and after just one sip of Prima Pils, you will be too!
